Safe dental treatment

At our small animal clinic, we have a strong focus on good dental hygiene and dental health. We carry out most dental treatment for dogs and cats. All our vets have further training in dental diseases - and treatment.

Thorough health examination

The animal is delivered fasted from the night before to the clinic in the morning between 08.00 and 0. Before the animal is put under anaesthesia, the vet carries out a thorough health examination and dental check. Furthermore, a syringe is given with a pain reliever and sedative, so that the animal falls asleep. Anesthetic is also given intravenously. We use an infusion pump that gives the animal anesthetic continuously. This ensures that the animal receives sufficient and correct dosage during the entire procedure.

Ensure free airways

All animals under anesthesia with us are intubated, this to ensure free airways and to prevent water from the dental instruments from running down the throat. After intubation, the animals receive a supply of oxygen until they wake up. All animals are also equipped with venoflon, so that we can give fluids, painkillers and other medicines quickly and efficiently at all times. Throughout the operation, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, temperature and mucous membranes are monitored.

Tartar

Tartar removal is carried out with an ultrasonic scaler that quickly and effectively cleans the teeth without damaging the enamel. The teeth are then polished to protect the enamel. We always probe for any caries and holes, as well as looking for pocket formations in the gums around the teeth.

Rule out disease

We also take x-rays of the teeth to rule out disease in the tooth roots. In many cases, the health of the teeth cannot be evaluated without a dental X-ray. If we find teeth that are damaged and need to be extracted, we always call the owner before tooth extraction for approval and price information. If the animal has been anaesthetized for a long time or if we are unable to carry out tooth extraction on the same day for another reason, we set up a new appointment for tooth extraction.

Safe awakening

After we have finished the treatment, the animal lies awake, where we monitor its body temperature, pulse and respiration. The animal is given a syringe with a wake-up agent, so that the animal is fully awake when the owner returns for collection.

Our dental treatment includes:

Tartar removal – Tartar is very common in both dogs and cats, especially in small dog breeds and older animals. Tartar can over time cause gingivitis and infection in the jawbone. This causes pockets to form between the gums and the teeth, as well as loose teeth.
Digital X-ray - a very important aid to be able to provide correct dental treatment
