What is the ECVO HED Platform?
The ECVO HED Platform stands for the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) Hereditary Eye Disease (HED) Platform. This platform is an important tool in veterinary ophthalmology aimed at identifying and recording hereditary eye diseases in animals, primarily in dogs.
The ECVO HED Platform was developed to standardize and improve eye examinations to detect hereditary eye diseases. Eye examiners certified by ECVO use the platform to record findings from systematic eye examinations. These findings are collected in a database that helps monitor the prevalence of eye diseases across breeds.
The goal of the platform is to reduce the incidence of hereditary eye diseases through responsible breeding. By establishing a European standard for diagnosis and documentation, breeders can make informed choices based on genetic risk factors and the health status of their animals.
