Direct settlement at A-Vet Larvik

We offer direct settlement with the following insurance companies:

  • Sour
  • Gentile
  • Future (DnB / SpareBank 1 / Eika)
  • IF
  • Friend
  • KLP

What does direct settlement mean?

You only pay us your deductible. We send the invoice directly to the insurance company, and they pay us the rest. You avoid reimbursement paperwork and waiting time!

What do you need to provide when you call?

In order for us to be able to make direct payments, you must have:

  • Insurance number (you can find it in the insurance company's app or on "My page")
  • Claim number (if the insurance requires that YOU open a case yourself)
  • Deductible (how much do YOU pay per damage)

Fee

There is a direct settlement fee of 268 kr per claim.

When do we NOT make direct settlements?

We cannot make direct payments if:

  • The animal is within the waiting period with the insurance company (typically 20-60 days from the start of the insurance)
  • The insurance has recently been changed, and the damage occurred before the new insurance took effect
  • The insurance company denies coverage

Important: Coverage discrepancies

Sometimes insurance doesn't cover EVERYTHING. For example:

  • Bandage materials
  • Dietary supplements
  • Special diets
  • Treatment for which the insurance has reservations

If this happens, you will receive a payment link for the remaining balance. We will generally inform you before we start treatment if we discover something that is typically not covered.

Before You Book An Appointment

It is important that you know your insurance information before you come to us. This will help us avoid misunderstandings and allow us to treat your animal quickly.

You need to find:

1. Insurance number (or Policy number)
You can find this in the insurance company's app or on "My Page". You will need it when you call and book an appointment.

2. Deductible
How much do YOU pay per claim? (Typically 1300-2500 NOK, or % of cost). You need to know this so you know how much money you need to bring.

3. Waiting period
How many days does the insurance have to be active before it covers? For injuries it is usually 0 days (covered from day 1). For illness usually 20-60 days. If your animal was insured recently, the treatment may not be covered.

4. How much do you have left?
If you have used your insurance earlier this year, you may have used up some of the amount. Most insurance policies have a maximum amount per year. You can find out how much you have left in the insurance company's app.

5. Claim number (if necessary)
Some insurance companies require that YOU open a case yourself in the app before coming to us. Check with your insurance company.

Important: Some Insurances Require YOU to Open a Case

We cannot open a case on your behalf. Some insurance companies require the pet owner to log into the app/My Page and open a case before processing.

Check with your insurance company:

  • Do they require you to open a case before processing?
  • If yes: Do it yourself in the app/on My Page BEFORE you come to us
  • You can ask your insurance company if you are unsure.

We will send the invoice after processing, but if the insurance company requires you to open a case first, you must do so yourself.

What is Covered by Pet Insurance?

Typically covered:

  • Injuries from day 1
  • Illness (with waiting period)
  • Operations and surgery
  • Medications and treatment
  • Rehabilitation
  • Diagnostics (X-ray, ultrasound, blood tests)

Typically NOT covered:

  • Preventive treatment (vaccination, dental check-up)
  • Pre-existing diseases
  • Treatment before the withdrawal period
  • Chronic illness after a long time
  • Some special treatments and dietary supplements

Deductible – How Does It Work?

The deductible is what YOU pay of the costs yourself. Most insurance policies have both almost og movable deductible.

Example from Agria:

Your dog swallows a sock and needs surgery. The cost is 15,000 kroner. With Agria's insurance (fixed deductible 1,800 kroner, variable 15%):

  • Fixed deductible: NOK 1,800 (you pay ONLY ONCE per 135 days)
  • Variable deductible: 15% of 13,200 kr = 1,980 kr
  • You pay a total of: 3,780 kr
  • The insurance pays: NOK 3,400

50 days later, the dog gets a deep paw cut (4,000 NOK). Now you pay:

  • Fixed deductible: NONE (already paid for this period)
  • Variable deductible: 15% of 4,000 NOK = 600 NOK
  • You pay: 600 kr
  • The insurance pays: NOK 3,400

Important: You only pay the fixed deductible ONCE per 135-day period, even if you visit the vet several times!

Variety: Different insurance companies have different deductibles. Check your certificate or call your insurance company to understand how YOUR insurance works.

Other important things:

Waiting period: The insurance starts with a waiting period. Injuries are usually covered from day 1. Illness from day 20. Allergy from day 60.

Age limits: Agria, IF and Frende cover animals for their entire lives. Other companies may have age limits of 10-13 years.

Not everything is covered: Some insurance policies cover dental treatment, others do not. Agria covers tooth resorption in cats. IF may not cover it. Check your proof or call your insurance company.

Post-Settlement – Difference Between Expected and Actual Coverage

When you use pet insurance, you normally only pay the deductible on the day. But sometimes the insurance company tells us that they cover less than we expected – or more. This is called settlement, and it is important that you understand how it works.

How direct settlement works

With direct settlement, you pay your deductible at the time of your visit. We then send the bill and documentation to the insurance company, who assesses what is covered according to their terms. We are then informed of the amount of coverage they provide.

When do deviations occur?

The insurance company may deny or limit coverage for things that we did not know in advance:

  • Equipment and medicines: Bandage materials, special medicines, dietary supplements and food are often not covered
  • Dental treatment: Some insurance policies cover tooth extraction in the event of an accident, while others do not cover dental treatment at all.
  • Rehabilitation: Physiotherapy, swimming pool and exercise programs are rarely covered
  • Condition deviation: The insurance may have caveats or exceptions that we were not aware of.
  • Karen days: If the animal became ill before the waiting period had expired, it is not covered.

It can go both ways.

Account in the red (you owe more): The insurance covers less than we thought. You will receive a payment link for the difference.

Account in plus (you get money back): The insurance covers more than we thought. You will get your money back using the payment method you used.

What can you do to avoid surprises?

  1. Check the terms and conditions in advance: Read your insurance document or call the insurance company and ask what is covered.
  2. Tell us at the time of your visit: Let us know if you have insurance and which company
  3. Ask before treatment: If you are unsure about anything, ask the vet or reception before treatment starts.
  4. Without direct settlement? If you do not have a direct settlement agreement, you must pay the full amount yourself and submit a bill to the insurance company for settlement.

We work to minimize deviations

  • We always check which insurance companies we have direct settlement agreements with.
  • We check what is likely to be covered before we start treatment.
  • We will call you if we discover anything during treatment that we are unsure about coverage for.
  • We document everything carefully so that the settlement is correct.

But insurance terms are complex, and sometimes we only know when the insurance company reviews the case. Therefore, it is important that you understand that discrepancies can occur, and that we then arrange it through your account with us.

What if you can't pay the deductible on the day?

We understand that sometimes it can be more expensive than expected. If you are unable to pay the full deductible on the day of treatment, we have solutions:

Resource Bank – Payment Plan (Animal Account)

We work with Ressursbank, which offers a payment plan. You can pay your deductible over several months instead of all at once.

  • You choose: 1-12 months interest-free, or up to 54 months with interest
  • You will receive an invoice from Ressursbank the month after the visit.
  • You apply and get an answer the same day.
  • You must have ID with you (driver's license, bank card, passport)
  • You must be creditworthy

This is NOT more debt, it's just that you pay over time instead of the entire amount at once.

Call us before you come, or we'll help you with the process when you're with us!
